Successful Learning For All Students!

Chariton Community School District
Report to the Community

The Chariton Community Schools, like every public school district in Iowa, is governed by a board of directors.  The board is responsible for determining policies, setting the budget and maintaining standards of excellence in education on behalf of the community.  Board members are elected by Lucas County voters for three-year terms.  Because the district school board members are committed to their own lifelong learning, they are regular participants in training and board development opportunities through the Iowa Association of School Boards.

Ensuring Teacher Quality
The quality of our staff is key to our district's ability to improve student achievement.  The district supports quality in two ways:

Staff Development
During the 2005-2006 school year, the Chariton Community School District offered several in-services consistent with our school improvement goals.  These included developing technology techniques for the staff and enhancing instructional strategies designed to improve reading.  Additional presentations were conducted on classroom management and improving student attitudes and responsibilities.

Staff Evaluation
Formal performance evaluation of certified staff members are used to improve instruction and enhance student achievement.  All beginning teachers are evaluated at a minimum of twice a year during their three-year probationary period.  All experienced teachers are evaluated on a three-year rotational basis.

 Achievement in the Basics
The Chariton Community Schools use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED) as an accountability and improvement measure at the district level.  The District also has developed and used as an accountability and improvement measure local curriculum-based assessments (CBA) in grades K-5.  For accountability to the community, we report achievement test results in reading and math at grades 4, 8, and 11, and in science in grades 8 and 11.  Our school improvement goals were based partially on our ITBS, ITEDS, CBA scores and other relevant assessments.

Testing expert's stress that this data is best used to identify areas of strength and weakness for individual students and classes, and to measure growth.  CCSD administrators and teachers use test data in planning curriculum, developing school improvement plans, and making instructional decisions.

District improvement goals focus on reducing the percentage of student's scoring at or below the 40th "Iowa" percentile rank on the ITBS/ITEDS test.

Curriculum
  • The CCSD Curriculum is designed to ensure that students achieve the district's curriculum content standards and benchmarks.

  • Our district's elementary and middle school curriculum is designed around proven practice in education to provide students with a foundation in the basic skills, problem solving, team work, citizenship and behavior.

  • The high school curriculum offers over 110 courses in language arts, social studies, physical education, science, math, foreign languages, art, music, industrial tech, family and consumer sciences, agricultural education, health education, business education, and driver's education.  Eligible students may also choose dual credit courses available with Indian Hills and William Penn Colleges.

  • Standards and benchmarks have been written for the curricular areas of reading, language arts, math, and science.
