The Citizen of the Year award has a long history in Chariton and Lucas County dating back to the 1940's. Since the reorganization of the Chamber in 1988, several citizens have been chosen for this honor. Past Citizen of the Year titles have been awarded to Joe Levis, Ken Crist, Dick Threlkeld, Burt Cross, Bill Bruce, John Hamilton, Lloyd Mullins, Sherrill Garton, Jim Moore, Diane Anderson, Jack Jennings, Shawn Garton, Tim McGee, Gert Patterson, Bill Marner, Linda Neer, Don Garrett, Abe Savage, Rev. Bill Nielsen, and Mary Stierwalt, Randy Westman. Dwight and Ruth Vredenburg were Citizens of the Century in 2000. The 2009 Citizen of the Year was announced at the Chamber's Annual Meeting on July 22, 2010. Randy Westman made the presentation to Byron Welch.
